Wash-House Court, The Charterhouse

London Borough of Islington

Sensitive alterations to a highly significant Grade I listed complex in the London Borough of Islington. We worked closely with Wright & Wright Architects to ensure that modifications to Wash-House Court avoided harm to sensitive built fabric, whilst facilitating the continued historic use of the Site as accommodation for the Brothers of the Charterhouse Almshouse.
Our contribution to the project included a thorough historical analysis of Wash-House Court and its multiple layers of built fabric, including medieval timbers and post-war repairs by Seely & Paget following severe bomb damage. This fed into detailed significance plans for each level of the Site which informed Wright & Wright’s proposals. The resulting scheme carefully balances the need to provide independent living for older residents with protecting the highly significant built fabric, thereby ensuring the continued charitable use of the complex for generations to come.
