The Britannia Project

The Britannia Project, Hackney

London Borough of Hackney

The Britannia Project is two-phase a 3.2 ha masterplan that, when complete, will include 480 new homes (of which 81 are affordable), a new secondary school for 900 local students plus a 200 student sixth form, and a state-of-the art leisure centre. After having planning permission granted in 2018, the first phase of the project was completed in 2021. The initial phase included both the Britannia Leisure Centre and the City of London Academy, Shoreditch Park.

The Britannia Leisure Centre, designed by FaulknerBrowns, combines three swimming pools, a gym, sports courts and pitches, a soft play area, creche and a café. In 2022 the leisure centre won New London Awards in, both, the “culture” and “overall” category. In the same year it won an AJ100 award in the community impact of the year category.
