Maida Vale Studios, Westminster

City of Westminster

The new home for award winning Hans Zimmer and Working Title sound and film production studio in the Grade II listed former BBC Maida Vale Studios. The music and film recording studios will secure the continued studio legacy of the building while also revealing more of the original Edwardian structure of the former roller skating rink through complementary design solutions to bring the studio facilities into the 21st century. Many heritage benefits have been achieved through the design proposals to enhance and better reveal elements of significance through the design development process, working closely with Westminster City Council, Historic England, 20th Century Society and The Victorian Society.

A building which holds great cultural significance over its time under BBC management, for UK and international music production. Since the mid-1930s countless artists have recorded at the Maida Vale Studios, including David Bowie, Led Zepplin, Elton John, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Bing Crosby, Adele, Nirvana, Amy Winehouse, The Smiths, The Rolling Stones, George Michael and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The retrofit scheme will retain the music production spaces while creating room for film production and editing facilities, turning the recording studios into a globally significant music and recording facility.
