Angel Square

Angel Square, Islington

London Borough of Islington

The project consisted of the redevelopment of the Angel Square site, located above Angel Underground Station, at the junction of Islington High Street and City Road. The scheme comprised the partial demolition of the existing building and construction of two new floors at roof level to provide office floorspace, retail floorspace and a public house. The proposal’s façade, materials and colouration respond to its sensitive heritage context which includes three conservation areas, as well as several Grade II and locally listed buildings along Islington High Street and City Road. The proposal’s massing and form was carefully sculpted to be sympathetic to the local context, but also to respond to London View Management Framework View 1A.2 from Alexandra Palace to St Paul’s Cathedral. The proposal’s clean and calm skyline composition improves the visibility of the cathedral and exposes previously occluded elements of it in this view.
