Plumstead Library, Greenwich

Royal Borough of Greenwich

Plumstead Library officially opened in 1904 and is one of the earliest of the many funded by the philanthropist Carnegie. The project involved the restoration of the original library, and a 1930 extension, excluded from the listing, was demolished to allow for an extension to accommodate new leisure facilities. The result is a carefully detailed building of high-quality materials and a simple appearance that does not compete with the restored listed library. The project won a RIBA London award and a RIBA London conservation award in 2022.
